Gulf Coast State college boys team had one of their best seasons in many years, thanks in part to their defense and communication on both ends. One of the X-factors for the Commodores happened to be 6’5″ guard Cam Holden from Georgia. Holden’s assertiveness and attention to detail are what helped him and his team have a much successful season throughout the year.
For those who may not know, Holden is a very diverse player who can play all five positions on the floor. He can play in the post along with step outside and knock down shots from time to time on the perimeter. Holden is also known as one of the most athletic players in the NJCAA this past season. His leaping ability is out of this world and he can put on a show for the crowd with his dunk fest.
Holden averaged 15.3 points in his sophomore campaign at Gulf Coast while shooting 41 percent from the field. He was also a rebounding force averaging 6 boards as well. Holden was always focused on both ends of the floor. He understood where to be on the floor and how to make an impact while on the court. His play on the floor impacted his teammates in as he was the driving force for the team all season.
With his dominant season for the Commodores, Holden’s stock has gone up from before and offers are coming everywhere for him. Teams in Georgia Southern, James Madison, and others have shown their interest in Holden. And they would love to add him to the program. Holden will only help teams improve with his intelligence for the game. When he is in attack mode on the floor; it will only make any team better as it’s rare to see players with Holden’s tenacity.
2020 Cam Holden 6’6” SG | Gulf Coast State (FL) has committed to UT-Martin https://t.co/Tzd3DhlDxW— Dirty South Juco (@DirtySouthJuco) April 22, 2020
On April 22, Holden made the decision to officially commit to UT-Martin to finish his collegiate career. This is a team that had a lot of talent and started the season well. But with injury and chemistry issues; the team would finish with a record of 9-20 overall and 5-13 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Holden can become a difference-maker with his presence on this Skyhawks team. A player of his caliber who can play anywhere on the floor can benefit them in a big way. With hard work at practice and setting the tone for his team. In addition, Holden could wind up to be a vocal leader for the Skyhawks, just like he was for the Commodores this past season.
According to Holden’s announcement, he seems very excited to begin his new adventure playing under Division I basketball. He has worked twice as hard over the years to be in the position that he deserves. It’s great to see everything pay off for the kid. The question is now what’s next for Holden and the Skyhawks? Well, Holden has proven to us before that he is a winner. More importantly, he will carry that same energy next season. And rub it off on his new teammates on the floor.
