What WNBA Teams Need in the Draft?

The draft is just days away; many teams are looking to improve themselves. This year’s draft is loaded with talent, and organizations can improve in this draft. Now time to take a look at what WNBA teams need in the draft.

Eastern Conference

Atlanta Dream Guard/Forward

The Atlanta Dream traded for Kalani Brown and Courtney Williams. They also signed Glory Johnson this offseason. The Dream needs to focus on shooting and scoring in the draft, they shot 37 percent from the field and 29 percent from three-point land last season.

Chicago Sky Guard

The Chicago Sky are already pretty much set, with Vandersloot, Quigley, DeShields, and Dolson coming back. I feel the sky will use the draft to add more depth to the guard position and the frontcourt positions. A playmaking point guard coming off the bench would benefit Chicago.

Connecticut Sun Forward/Guard

The Connecticut Sun made a power move by trading for DeWanna Bonner. In the draft, they should focus on creating more depth in the frontcourt; last season, lack of depth killed them. Another shooter and scorer would also help with the loss of Shekinna Stricklen.

Indiana Fever Power Forward/Guard

The Indiana Fever have the third pick in the draft, and i think they should take Lauren Cox. Cox and Tearia McCowan would make a dangerous front line, with Marianne Stanley coaching. The Fever can also draft a point guard with their later draft picks.

New York Liberty Point Guard/ Forward

The Liberty will draft Sabrina Ionescu with the first pick of the WNBA Draft, but in round two, New York needs to focus on the forward position. The Liberty need more speed and quickness with the forwards to help out Ionescu and Tina Charles.

Washington Mystics Forward/ Guard

The defending champs are in good shape after resigning Elena Delle Donne and Emma Meesseman. The Washington Mystics also brought in Leilani Mitchell. In the draft, Washington should focus on backcourt and frontcourt depth to add to their talented roster.

Western Conference

Dallas Wings Forward/Point Guard

With four picks in the top 10 and six picks total, Dallas can do some damage in this year’s draft. Building around Arike Ogunbowale and Katie Lou Samuelson, the wings can address depth at the forward and point guard positions. With picks at two and five, the Wings can get a forward and a point guard. With 14 players on their roster and six draft picks, Dallas could do some wheeling and dealing.

Las Vegas Aces Shooting

The Las Vegas Aces are pretty much set, with the signing of Angel McCoughtry, their defense is going to be outstanding. What the Aces need with their lone draft pick is shooting. Las Vegas only has one shooter on their team, and that’s Kayla McBride.

Los Angeles Sparks Point Guard

The Los Angeles Sparks need a backup point guard behind Chelsea Gray. Also, in 2021 a lot of the Sparks players are free agents, and they will not be able to sign everybody back. So drafting players that they can develop will be critical in the draft.

Minnesota Lynx Point Guard/Power Forward

Minnesota lost Danielle Robinson and Seimone Augustus to free agency, and also Rebekkah Brunson retired, so the Lynx will be in the market for a point guard and a power forward in the draft. Minnesota needs to draft the top point guard on the board with their first pick.

Phoenix Mercury Shooting/Forward/Center

The Mercury traded for Skylar Diggins-Smith and now they have a big three with Diggins-Smith, Diana Taurasi, and Brittney Griner. It could be Taurasi’s final year in the WNBA, so the Mercury needs to think about drafting another wing player as a replacement. Also, finding another shooter on the floor to space the floor for the big three. Adding a backup center behind Grinner would be helpful to keep Griner fresh.

Seattle Storm Point Guard/Forward

With Sue Bird probably entering her last season, it is time for the Seattle Storm to look at drafting a point guard. Breanna Stewart is back and will join Natasha Howard on the court. Also, Seattle will need some frontcourt help.
